Comestible is a platform for food, the places it comes from and the people who grow it.

We publish zines, artwork, stories and a weekly newsletter devoted to food. We like to use food as a lens to look at other critical issues, from gender to culture to politics.

Ultimately, Comestible is a celebration of real food, accessible to real people.

Comestible is about celebrating the one thing that sustains us and brings us together, no matter who we are or where we are in the world.

Come join us.

In the spring of 2016, I launched a Kickstarter campaign to start a new food publication. I called it Comestible, which means “edible” and comes from the Medieval Latin word comestibilis.

Since that time, Comestible has grown into a platform for food, the places it comes from and the people who grow/make it. Through Comestible, I publish zines, artwork, stories and a weekly newsletter devoted to food. I like to think of Comestible as a place where food is a lens to look at other critical issues, from gender to culture to politics.

Ultimately, Comestible is a celebration of real food, accessible to real people. Comestible is about celebrating the one thing that sustains us and brings us together, no matter who we are or where we are in the world.

When I started out, I didn’t want Comestible to be an online magazine. I wanted it to exist in print and print only. But as the years have gone on, and the Comestible community has grown, I have felt that the print and digital need to merge. It’s hard to keep up a print publication and build a following without having a digital presence. There are also stories that have been featured in the print publication, or in the newsletter, that I want to be able to share in a bigger way online. I also asked Comestible readers if they would be interested in an online platform, and they said yes. So here we are. I am hoping that publishing a little more frequently online will allow us to expand and grow, and build some momentum for publishing future print issues.

As with any personal project, Comestible is constantly evolving and shifting. The Comestible shop is still open, and I am hoping to produce a print publication for this fall. We have our weekly newsletter that goes out every Friday, and I am hoping to use this space to feature some archived content from previous print issues as well as new things.

Along with this website, I’ve also launched a Patreon page for those of you who want to become monthly supporters of Comestible, helping us to invest in this space and continue to grow the community. Just a couple of dollars a month helps us to keep this website alive, pay for writing and artwork and continue to bring a diversity of stories focused around food. I would be thrilled if you considered becoming a monthly supporter.

I hope this new online space continues to be a platform for showcasing stories that otherwise go untold, and that we are able to use food as a jumping off point for delving into other important issues. I hope that you consider supporting the Comestible and that together we can contemplate and celebrate, gathering around the proverbial table and learn together.
